Following the success of Packplay in 2014, École de design de l’UQAM and Éco Entreprises Québec (ÉEQ) partnered to launch the second edition of the competition and announce that they have joined forces with the World Design Summit (WDS)—a major multisectoral event that will attract participants and speakers from around the world from October 17 to 20 at Palais des congrès de Montréal—to feature Packplay 2 as part of the conference’s expo.

PACKAGING IS EPHEMERAL AND SEDUCTIVE AND WE DEMAND A LOT FROM IT. IN SPITE OF ITS APPEAL, IT ALSO SYMBOLIZES THE ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES THAT COME WITH IT.”

Sylvain Allard, professor at École de design de l’UQAM

The Packplay project was born in the spirit of transparency, exchange, and collegiality. The first edition of the project, in 2014, offered a reflection on the user experience and brought together the work of nine universities from around the world as part of an exhibition at the UQAM Design Centre, in Montreal, and the publication of the original book, Packplay: the user-centred packaging project. Fuelled by the same enthusiasm that made Packplay such an international success, we proudly present the Packplay 2 project. The competition’s goal is to enhance research and innovation, and to make the work of the designers of tomorrow in all fields related to packaging design better known: industrial design, object design, graphic design, and brand image design.

This new edition has been developed in collaboration with ÉEQ, the extended producer responsibility organization that finances curbside recycling in the Province of Quebec and encourages companies to take into account the environmental impact of their packaging by adopting ecoresponsible practices. Packplay 2 clearly focuses on ecodesign and brings together package design work from universities and design schools from around the world .
